It can be painful and confusing to watch someone you love struggle with strong emotions. You may want to help, but you may not know what to say. At times, you may feel worried that your response could make the situation worse.

DBT Skills for Loved Ones is designed for parents, partners, spouses, adult children, family members, and carers of people who struggle with intense emotions.

The aim is to help loved ones feel more prepared during emotionally difficult moments. You will learn how to stay calm, listen carefully, and respond in a way that shows care and understanding.

One of the main skills taught is validation. Validation means showing someone that their feelings make sense, even when you do not agree with their choices or behaviour. Feeling understood can often help lower emotional distress and make it easier to talk about what needs to happen next.

You will also learn how to avoid becoming part of the emotional storm. This does not mean ignoring your loved one or walking away from them. It means learning how to remain steady, kind, and clear while still protecting your own wellbeing.

These skills are not about fixing your loved one or taking away all their pain. They are about learning how to be present, helpful, and supportive while also taking care of yourself.
