What is the DBT Companion App

Support When You Need It Most

When emotions become overwhelming, it can be difficult to think clearly, remember your coping skills, or know what to do next. In these moments, people may react impulsively or turn to behaviours that provide short-term relief but create greater difficulties afterwards.

The DBT Crisis Companion App is being designed to provide immediate, practical support during these difficult moments.

The app will guide users through clear, step-by-step actions based on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy skills. It will help users pause, assess the intensity of the crisis, identify what they are feeling and experiencing, and choose a safer and more effective response.

Depending on the situation, the app may guide the user through skills such as observing and describing emotions, using the STOP skill, applying TIP skills, paced breathing, considering pros and cons, or contacting an appropriate support person.

The goal is to help users create a vital space between the urge to act and the action itself—giving them an opportunity to regain control and reduce the risk of harmful, impulsive, or maladaptive behavior.

The app is being designed as a supportive companion that can be available between therapy sessions, particularly when a therapist, family member, or other support person may not be immediately available.
